Hi Singers!
My goodness, I love Reddit. I can’t stop listening to podcasts with hosts sharing the harrowing or hilarious or heartbreaking stories of anonymous authors. For this video, I had the opportunity to answer the questions of singers and friends or authors of singers. I love being in this world of music, and here’s what I got to explore.
Talking to a date about singing. Help!
One OP was going on a date with a professional singer and they wanted to have something to talk about on the date. This is so sweet and thoughtful, you can tell this person is an empathetic human. In most cases like this, I’ve found it’s best to just ask questions. OP’s date would have their own reasons for pursuing voice and their own path that would be completely unique (and probably fascinating) to them. Anytime you have the opportunity to get to know someone interesting, I encourage you to just ask questions and listen actively. You can never go wrong when you listen.
Are you passionate about anything that you’d want to share with a date?
Best storytelling songwriter?
One of the oldest gifts we mere humans have been given is the gift of the voice. Therefore, storytelling is also one of the oldest ways we’ve passed our history down before we had written language, or a mass audience that could read. Telling history through song has been around possibly for 43,000 years! And still, we love this art form. It is in our bones. For me, I love Jim Croce and lots of women in country music, like Lainey Wilson and Miranda Lambert. They all have this amazing ability to tell the story of someone else but express the emotions of their character so well.
Who’s a storyteller songwriter you love?
Writing about music? How to make a character sing in a book?
So, how do you make lyrics in a book without music make sense? In a similar vein, how do you write about singing in fiction? A lot of commenters were saying to just write it, give an idea of the tempo or feel, and let the reader fill in the rest. And I really like that advice. When it comes to fiction, I tend to lean more in murder mystery and thriller, there’s not a lot of songs in them…but I can imagine this advice to be the appropriate advice.
Let me know if you’ve ever read lyrics in a book that makes sense!
Most embarrassing choir stories!
THIS WAS GOLD. It would be different if the OP hadn’t told the story in such a way that made it okay to laugh. And that’s what we have to do. When we have these moments we can either wallow in the self-pity of embarrassment or we can remember we’re only humans and accept that this is part of the human experience.
Do you have any embarrassing singing moments that you can share?
Books on learning how to sing.
This could be my favorite question. Why do I love reading about vocal pedagogy so much? I think I need more hobbies. In this list, I’m sharing some of my favorite books on the voice. And here they are for you!
Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed these stories as much as I did! Until next time, keep learning, keep singing, and keep sharing your voice…we really want to hear it!
